Description
There were many arguments in the Leo family. But only rarely for personal reasons, mostly about politics, society, and the case. The Jewish grandfather Gerhard is a fighter in the French resistance, a spy and journalist, a powerful representative of power. His favorite daughter, Anne, marries the artist Wolf, who walks around with dyed green hair and calls the GDR a criminal gang. Anne, who joins the party at the age of seventeen, tries to love her rebellious husband without betraying her Stalinist father. The child Maxim grows up in increasingly escalating conflicts. He sees his screaming father before him, his mother secretly weeping in the kitchen, and his grandfather who has become a stranger to him. Eighteen years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, Maxim Leo returns to the GDR in his mind to write a poignantly wise account of how and why the state founded by his anti-fascist fathers failed.
